What has the web become?
I am an avid user of uBlock Origin on my browsers, and not because I "hate the site owners" but because I am privacy-conscious and also hate obtrusive advertising (I try my best to whitelist unobtrusive sites). uBlock allows me to do away with all of that and maintain my sanity on the web.
Today, when I was reading an article on Wired, I thought I'd try and disable my content blocker, as I had taken it for granted for what seemed like years. Here's what I saw:
That's right. In that second shot, there's a half-height advertisement, a banner with a free article counter and membership sale covering the other half, a cookie banner with an accessible "accept" button and what I assume is a labyrinth of cookie settings to disable any sort of ad personalization, an icon that indicates my browser blocker an auto-playing video in the background, and finally an obtrusive popup asking for your email address.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the reporting that Wired does and I believe their standpoints on various topics are noteworthy, however this is not what I believe the experience of anyone attempting to access journalism online should be.
I understand that this is a multifaceted issue, perhaps even every single one of those elements that I describe may lead to a heated debate. For starters, the issue of the sustainability of journalism in the age of the web, which seems to be the cause for nearly all of those obtrusive elements (advertising, paywalling, and perhaps newsletters). Also the cookie banner (or sometimes obscuring popup) that we see on nearly every site, and the issue of data privacy online.
I believe that it is possible for less obstructive and more respectful versions of resources such as this to exist. I shouldn't have to install a content blocker to access information on the web with peace of mind, as not even every internet user knows of such things. I should not be blocked out from journalism or any other sort of information, as not every user of the internet has the financial means to support every source they access. I should also, last but definitely not least, not have to click an obscured cookie options links and go through walls of legal language and options to make an informed decision about my personal data online.
I might seem like a choosing beggar at this point, but my sole aim of writing this is to ask, what do you think? Is this how you think the web should be? Or if not, how can we solve the underlying issues in better ways? For example, the Guardian has handled the paywall issue in a much more open and successful way, do you know of any other examples?

Any form of threatening, harassing, or violence / physical harm towards anyone will result in a ban
We have posted this before, but this needs to be reiterated.
We understand that many of you are emotionally driven to discuss your feelings on recent events, most notably the repeal of Net Neutrality - however inciting violence towards others is never ok. It is upsetting that we even have to post this.
Do we enjoy banning people for these types of offences? No... Many of us feel as if the system has failed and want some form of repercussion. But threats of violence and harassment are not the answer here.
And to be clear - here are some examples of what will get you banned:
I hope this PoS dies in a car fire
I want to punch him in the face til his teeth fall out
And if you are trying to be slick by using this form
I never condone violence but...
I would never say he should die but...
Im not one to wish death upon but...
Let's keep the threads civil.
If you violate this rule, you will be banned for 30 days, no exceptions

My friend's company is about to go full Black Mirror for employee reviews
My friends company, Imeg, is about to unleash an employee review app that is either supposed to at least augment, or take the place of the 360 degree employee review process. Employees will have access to the application on their Android/iOS device to be able to quickly "grade" their co-workers on their "performance" and "attitude." Right now it's only available on Google Play, but it should be available on the Apple Store this week. Hey, there's a single 5-star review already there too! As far as apps go, it's a simple forward to an Office 365 survey - so it's a pitiful implementation of a shitty idea.
Now, if you're not familiar with the show Black Mirror - I recommend you watch it, it's pretty thought-provoking in a 'what would happen if you took technology just a bit further in the wrong direction' kind of way. The episode in particular you should watch is 'Nosedive).'
From what I've learned, even during executive meetings about the implementation/brainstorming of this app, one of the other attendees mention "Hey...this reminds me, have you ever seen that show, Black Mirror-" only to be tersely interrupted by the president to roll his eyes and say "YES I HEARD ABOUT IT" and basically shut that thread down. From what I understand, only HR will have the ability to review the scoring system (who reviews HR employees?), and it will be tied directly to merit increases in some way.
This is some insane bullshit. What if the person you are interacting with has a bad day? What if someone just entered in bad reviews for the hell of it? What if you are an introvert? What if you only interact with 2 people in a day and 1 person doesn't like what you did for them? Who's going to follow up with or handle libelous ratings? There are so many reasons why this is a horrible idea on all levels...I am completely confounded as to how a company here in the United States can possibly think this is going to end well.
Holy shit, guys. Holy shit.

My name is Blaise Wabo, and I help organizations ensure that their web infrastructure is secure from cybersecurity threats, especially when compliance requirements are codified in law, as is the case in the healthcare industry. Rapidly changing healthcare and cybersecurity threats are both frequently making news headlines. Considering our country’s growing reliance on web-based solutions for day-to-day services like healthcare, and increasing cybersecurity threats from malefactors, sensitive health data must be handled with the utmost care – per standards such as the HIPAA privacy rule. A lot of changes have gone into effect recently, particularly with HITRUST including:

*HITRUST Validated Assessment QA changes effective April 1, 2019
*Interim Assessment changes effective April 1, 2019
