I’m Jeremy Kahn, the Fortune senior writer and tech journalist who authored our February/March cover story on “The Inside story of ChatGPT: How OpenAI founder Sam Altman built the world’s hottest technology with billions from Microsoft.” I’ve been covering A.I. for 7 years and write Fortune’s weekly Eye on A.I. newsletter.
I’ve previously written deep dives into Elon Musk’s Neuralink, Meta, DeepMind, and been covering Microsoft’s deepening relationship with OpenAI for years. I’ve interviewed most of A.I.’s leading lights, including DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis, Meta’s Yann LeCun, Google’s Jeff Dean, Yoshua Bengio, and Stability AI’s brash CEO Emad Mostaque. I’ve also quizzed Noam Chomsky about A.I. on stage at Web Summit.
As the cover story lays out, ChatGPT is extremely capable. But it isn’t perfect: Its answers are not always accurate and it is prone to amplifying racial, ethnic, and gender biases. But ChatGPT has captured people’s imaginations because it has provided the general public its first real glimpse of how powerful, and dangerous, A.I. technology is likely to become in the next few years.
ChatGPT is already threatening to upend the balance of power among the tech industry’s biggest companies, with Microsoft racing to incorporate OpenAI’s tech into a range of products, not least its search engine Bing, and Google rapidly trying to counter by adding A.I.-enhanced products to its lineup too.
I’ll be answering any of your questions about ChatGPT, Microsoft, and the future of A.I. live on Wednesday, February 8, from 9:30 to 10:30am EST.
Ask me anything!
